About This Report
NBI/Michael Sone Associates' Canadian
Mobile Data, Messaging and Internet Market Report, 2001 Edition is
the third in the current series dealing with mobile wireless
communications services and a companion to NBI/Michael Sone Associates' Canadian
Cellular Communications Market Report and Canadian In-Building
Wireless Communications Systems Market Report published earlier this
year.
This report examines the wireless messaging and data
market in Canada, its evolution toward the wireless Internet, the
services currently offered and the probable future direction and fit
with other wireless services. Of particular importance is the role
played by two-way messaging devices and digital cellular handsets in
popularizing the increased mobility of Internet access. This phenomenon
is examined through a detailed description and discussion of the
devices, services and technologies that have made this possible. As
well, NBI/Michael Sone Associates explores a few of the newest
applications and devices that are now being introduced and examines the
extent of their impact on the industry.
The first section comprises an overview and offers the
reader a quick study on all the relevant issues. The next four sections
examine in more detail the various types of first generation mobile data
applications, networks and devices along with their relevance to today's
market. Section six introduces second-generation services starting with
two-way messaging and describes the devices and services currently
available. Section seven provides a review of mobile Internet services
that are currently available while section eight offers a comprehensive
discussion on the device manufacturers that are mentioned almost daily
in the financial and industry media. Finally, sections nine, ten and
eleven offer the reader NBI/Michael Sone Associates' view of the future
of the wireless mobile Internet and give updates on Bluetooth and WAP
technologies. The text is buttressed by one Table and seven Exhibits.
Table 1 illustrates comparative features of wireless communications
devices. The Exhibits detail terminal shipments by Manufacturer and
pricing & availability of various device types, quantify subscriber
growth for each service provider from 2000 to 2004 for each of two-way
Messaging, Mobile Browser, SMS and one-way Paging.
