About This Report

NBI/Michael Sone Associates' Canadian Messaging/Unified Communications Market Report, 2002 Edition (formerly Canadian Voice Mail/Unified Messaging Market Report) is the eighth in NBI/Michael Sone Associates' series of reports on this market.

The report examines messaging as a service for the enterprise and SOHO end-user. Where appropriate, reference is made to residential messaging, but this is not intended to be the main focus of the report.

The report has been re-titled to reflect the changes to vendor offerings. Since the previous edition of this report , messaging has widened its scope to include not just voice, e-mail, and fax messages, but capabilities such as text-to-speech and speech recognition, as well as proactive services such as 'find-me, follow-me'; the title Messaging/Unified Communications better describes these capabilities.

Since 2000, there have been a number of changes in the vendor community. Cisco acquired the IP-enabled Unity product from Active Voice Corporation while the non-IP Active Voice portfolio, including Repartee, was acquired by NEC. Esnatech discontinued its Maverick product, AVT Corporation changed its name to Captaris, VOX Technology (Groupe Cerveau) ceased operations and Nitsuko became part of NEC. Lucent also spun off the part of its operation that serviced enterprise customers, into a separate company, Avaya. To enable the reader to make meaningful comparisons pre- and post- 2000 we have separated Lucent's 1999/2000 business into (i) enterprise and (ii) carrier and service provider and assigned the enterprise business to Avaya (although recognizing that Avaya did not exist prior to September 2000). To reflect the removal of some of the companies from the tables in this report, we have increased the numbers categorized as 'Other' accordingly.

The companies profiled have been categorized into two groups: (i) manufacturers that sell systems directly (or through distributors) to enterprises and (ii) carriers and service providers (CaSPs) as well as bureaus that provide a hosted messaging service to the enterprise, SOHO, and residential marketplace.

The report contains profiles of 14 manufacturers as well as six carriers, service providers and service bureaus and describes their Canadian presence, strategy, products and market positioning as well as upcoming features and functionality. There are 14 Exhibits that both quantify and analyse the market and the vendors therein, providing information on revenues, shipments (systems and ports), market share in terms of installed base, channels to market, geographic distribution and system size for the period 2000-2002.

At the end of the report is a glossary that describes in more detail the technical information in the body of the document. The information contained in the report is the result of extensive primary research. Principal sources include interviews with vendors and service providers.

The tables contain both original and derived values and there are instances where calculated row and/or column totals differ from the sum of the row and/or column by 1 unit. This is due to rounding and is not a calculation error.
