About This Report

At over 85 pages and examining the period 2007-2011, the Canadian Unified Communications Market Report, 2009 Edition is NBI/Michael Sone Associates’ first report on this sector and describes the Canadian business market for unified communications (UC) products offered by major CPE manufacturers. We define UC as a combination of voice, messaging and presence information plus potentially other media and applications integrated into a single user interface. This report sizes the market in terms of the additional software and hardware components layered on top of telephony and data infrastructure to implement unified communications solutions that meet this criteria.

Detailed profiles of the leading vendors in Canada —Avaya, Cisco, Microsoft, Mitel, NEC, Nortel, Panasonic, Siemens and Toshiba — are the cornerstone of this study. The overall Canadian market is illustrated by supplementing these manufacturer profiles with quantitative analysis. Each detailed profile contains five discrete tables, so that, along with an additional six exhibits in the Market Detail section, the reader is provided with quantitative information on revenues, total shipments, regional shipments, vertical market shipments and installed base. Additional brief profiles describe low-market share UC vendors including 3Com, Alcatel-Lucent and others.

This report, together with others on the KTS/PBX/IP-PBX (business telephone systems), Ethernet switches (used to create local area networks) and Automatic Call Distribution systems (used to create in-bound contact centres) comprise the cornerstone of NBI/Michael Sone Associates’ research on the Canadian CPE market. The scope of our reports have been defined such that revenue and shipment estimates are additive without any “double-counting”.

We note that unified communications is delivered over a converged network infrastructure and refer the reader to NBI/Michael Sone Associates’ Canadian PBX Market Report for market information about telephony infrastructure, the Canadian Ethernet Switch Market Report for market information about LAN switching infrastructure, and the Canadian ACD Market Report for market information about contact centres, a popular UC companion product.

As with all NBI/Michael Sone Associates reports, information has been gathered from primary sources.

Please note that reported revenues are at end-user retail levels (rather than manufacturer wholesale revenues) and represent proceeds from the sale of unified communications software and hardware products in the Canadian market only. These revenues exclude consulting or professional services fees, installation, maintenance contracts and service revenues. All figures are in Canadian dollars unless otherwise noted.
